Chapter Eleven
“How many years has it been since we did this?”
Colt slung his arm around her shoulders as they walked. “Too many.”
She looked up at him and smiled. “Good answer.”
“It’s the right answer. In fact, I think we should make a pact right now.”
“What kind of pact?”
“That we’ll never let another year go by without coming down here to walk on this beach.”
“Aww. I like that idea. Though, if we move, if I sell the house, we’d be trespassing if we walked down here.”
He hugged her closer into his side. “True. But I don’t think you ever want to sell this place, do you?”
“No. But I will if that’s what’s best for us.”
He stopped walking and slid his arms around her waist. “Is it bugging you, too?”
She raised an eyebrow, but he thought she knew what he meant.
“We haven’t talked about where we want to live—where we want to build our life.”
“Yeah. It has been on my mind. I know I’m being selfish. I always ask you to come here.”
“You know I’ll never say no.”
“Exactly. I do. But I know you love your house, too. You’re just as attached to it as I am to this place.”
Colt looked up at the house. It was beautiful, especially in the late afternoon sun. “No. I do love my house, but not as much as you love this place. It is more practical, though.”
She chuckled. “Of course, it is, and if you’re trying to appeal to my practical side, that should, in theory, work. But it doesn’t for some reason. I know it’s a drive from here into town, and that might be an issue over the years—for us going to work and …”
She seemed hesitant to say it, so he finished the sentence for her. “And for our kids going to school.”
She smiled. “Yep. But then, I did it.”
Colt stopped walking as a thought struck him. “I hope we have all boys.”
“Why?” Cassie’s eyes were wide.
He laughed. “Because if we have a daughter, one day she’ll want to date. And I can’t deal with the idea of some kid driving her home up here like I used to drive you.”
She laughed. “At least we’ll know every spot they might stop to make out on the way home.”
Colt shuddered, and he was only half faking it. “She may never be allowed to date.”
“You’ll get used to it. I mean, if she dates a guy like you, then I’ll consider her—and us—very lucky.”
“She could do worse,” he agreed as they walked on. “So, are we reaching the conclusion that we want to live here?”
“I believe we are. I feel as though I should squash what I want and agree to whatever you want, but …”
“No! I don’t want you to ever do that, Cass. We both have to be honest about what we want and figure out how to make us both happy.”
“I know. But when it’s an either-or situation like this, then one of us has to compromise.”
“And I’m prepared to. I’m more concerned that we get to live together than where we do it.
